A bunch of great links this week. Enjoy 🙂

• Dirk Lemmermann has two posts this week. Firstly, a post titled ‘JavaFX is Here to Stay!‘, and secondly a post titled ‘Cool: JavaFX in the Browser!‘. I think both titles are relatively self-explanatory 🙂
• Jens Deters has announced the release of FontAwesomeFX 8.7.
• Speaking of Jens, he has also announced the release of MQTT.fx 1.0.0.
• Alexander Casall has posted an interview with Benjamin Gudehus about the current state and future of TestFX.
• Hendrik Ebbers has posted a Dolphin Platform jump start blog post, to help get people up to speed on using Dolphin Platform in their own projects.
• Speaking of Hendrik, he has two smaller posts. Firstly, on creating round images with JavaFX, and secondly, styling a JavaFX Scrollbar.
• Rob Terp continues to improve his NetBeans Plugin to improve support for automatic generation of getter / setter / property methods for JavaFX properties.
• AsciidocFX 1.4.3 has just been released – this is a very nice app if you are writing AsciiDoc documentation.
• If you are interested in learning JavaFX, I just stumbled upon this training course that is (apparently) free right now (down from $49). I have not taken it so I can’t speak to its quality.

• Adam Bien has interviewed Peter Rogge about NetBeansIDE-AfterburnerFX-Plugin, a NetBeans IDE plugin which supports the afterburner.fx library.
• Andreas Billmann has created SmartCSV.fx, a “simple JavaFX application to load, save and edit a CSV file and provide a JSON configuration for columns to check the values in the columns.”
• Florian Brunner has announced the release of Drombler FX 0.7. Drombler FX is a modular application framework for JavaFX.
• Gluon has posted about embedding a database in your cross-platform / cross-device mobile Java projects.
• René Jahn has blogged about his research into mobile interfaces built with JavaFX.
• Christoph Keimel has posted about customising the e4 main window with e(fx)clipse.
• If you’re in or around the Zürich area, a new JavaFX meetup group has started for people interested in all things JavaFX.

JavaFX links of the week, November 23

A relatively quiet week this week – but I hope you enjoy nonetheless 🙂

• I finally got around to announcing ControlsFX 8.40.10 was available for download. This is yet another big step forward for the ControlsFX project, so thanks to all the contributors to it.
• An interview with Johan Vos was posted on YouTube recently, where he talks about JavaFX on mobile.
• Dirk Lemmermann posted the slides from his JavaOne talk titled ‘JavaFX Real-World Apps‘.
• Speaking of Dirk, he posted about ‘When to use JavaFX instead of HTML‘, and this was responded to by Shai Almog with his post ‘Should Oracle spring clean JavaFX?‘. I could talk at length about this topic, but all I’ll say is what I always say: no one knows the full extent of usage of JavaFX, and any claims to its success and failure are uninformed at best (and intentional FUD at worst). I’m in the fortunate position of having far more insight into what companies are doing than most and it amazes me what I see sometimes – the innovation and extent of work companies are doing is really inspiring. Therefore, I do suggest that people take some topics with a grain of salt, but I am presenting both sides for completeness.

• Dirk Lemmerman has two additional ‘JavaFX Real-World Apps’ posts that I missed during JavaOne. Firstly, ‘EIZO CuratOR Caliop‘, and secondly, ‘Emirates Airlines Network Capacity Optimization‘.
• Hendrik Ebbers has announced the release of ‘Dolphin Platform’. You can learn more about this project from the Dolphin Platform website.
• Speaking of the Dolphin Platform, Sven Reimers interviewed Michael Heinrichs and Hendrik Ebbers about this project recently whilst at Devoxx.
• Speaking of Devoxx, the Gluon blog has an overview of Gluon activities at Devoxx, including an hour-long presentation by Johan Vos, as well as a shorter interview with him.
• Speaking of Gluon, there is also a blog post from there about the recent RoboVM closed-sourcing of their library, and the implications of this on Gluon and the JavaFXPorts open source project.

JavaOne is over and it’s time to get back into work. The good news is that JavaOne 2016 is in mid-September, so only ~10 months away now! 🙂 Here are the links that come out over the last few weeks whilst I’ve been away at JavaOne. I’m sure I’ve missed some but feel free to email them to me and I’ll include them next week.

• Alexander Casall has started working on a FocusManager for JavaFX.
• Sven Ehrke has posted about his preferred way of building JavaFX applications using presentation state.
• James Nocentini has posted about ‘Getting Started with JavaFX and Couchbase Mobile‘.
• Pat Martin has announced the release of Dex 0.8. Dex “aims to bring sophisticated visualization capabilities without requiring a high degree of expertise in order to get professional results.”
• Gluon has three blog posts of relevance this week. Firstly, the announcement that it won a Dukes Choice award at JavaOne (and I do feature in the attached photo). Secondly, that Gluon is seeking skilled JavaFX / Java engineers to join the growing team. Thirdly, a post detailing the impact on Gluon from recent changes in the iOS ecosystem (i.e. changes in RoboVM licensing and ownership).
• René Jahn has posted about live css hacking (similar to what is available in Scenic View with CSSFX). There is also an overview post of some of the features of the JVx library (namely, the ability to code once and run on multiple devices).
• Peter Rogge has been working on the NetBeansIDE-AfterburnerFX-Plugin, which “is a NetBeans IDE plugin which supports the file generation in convention with the library afterburner.fx in a JavaFX project.”
• David Ray has open sourced his Mosaic layout container project.

‘Twas the week before JavaOne and not a developer was stirring 🙂 Well, almost – there are still some interesting links this week. For everyone going to JavaOne I wish you safe travels and I look forward to seeing you all in a weeks time. For those of you unable to attend – keep an eye out on the usual places for all the latest news. I’ll not be doing my post next week, but I will try my best to recap when I return to New Zealand after JavaOne.

• Better late than never, Jeff Friesen has just posted about JavaFX improvements in Java SE 8u40 (such as accessibility, dialogs, spinner, and formatted text input).
• Michael Heinrichs has open sourced his ?aj testing framework. ?aj “enables you to write expectations for your tests in a straightforward and simple way.”
• Hendrik Ebbers has posted a tutorial on how to build a JavaFX application using the Dolphin Platform project.
• Andres Almiray has announced that Basilisk 0.0.0 has been released. Basilisk is a fork of Griffon that also includes mobile support.
• I came across FXMaps on GitHub this week. It is a JavaFX Client API for Google Maps Services.

JavaFX links of the week, October 12

Not long to go now until JavaOne! I’m really looking forward to heading over there again – it’s always nice to meet old and new friends. If you’re going to JavaOne be sure to come up and say hi! 🙂 There is a heap of interesting links this week – there is not the usual quiet period before JavaOne like in most years! Enjoy.

• There were a number of Gluon open source related posts this week. Firstly, there was the announcement of Gluon Ignite, an open source JavaFX dependency injection framework. Secondly, they announced the release schedules for Scene Builder and JavaFXPorts projects. Thirdly, they released Gluon JavaFX Mobile SDK 8.60.6 for Android and iOS. Fourthly, they also released Gluon JavaFX Embedded (ARM) SDK 8.60.6. Finally, there was an interesting blog post about writing native activities for Android / iOS using the open source Gluon Charm Down library.
• Jens Deters has released MQTT.fx 0.0.18. As always this comes with a number of new features and bug fixes.
• Rob Terp has a small post about some useful tools that people who develop JavaFX software should be familiar with.
• Hendrik Ebbers continues to post about the Dolphin Platform project. This week he has posts on the model API and the view API.
• Andres Almiray has blogged about how the Griffon project has been forked to create the Basilisk project, which “aims to bring the Griffon experience to mobile/desktop application development”.
• A. Sundararajan has posted about building a standalone JavaFX FXML app with nashorn scripts for event handling – and no java code!
• Dirk Lemmermann has opened the online store for the CalendarFX project (it is also available on ComponentSource).

JavaFX links of the week, October 5

It’s only three weeks until JavaOne is in full swing (pun intended) – I hope those of you presenting are getting prepared. Myself? I’m getting there slowly… I can’t wait until JavaOne arrives – being a month later this year has set my excitement up a level it seems.

• Hendrik Ebbers has blogged a sneak peak at the Dolphin Platform – an open source project he is working on which will be shown in more detail at JavaOne.
• Gluon did two interesting posts this week. Firstly, they have developed an alternative JavaOne client for mobile devices. It is very nice looking! Secondly, they have released live templates for JavaFX properties for use in IntelliJ IDEA. Disclaimer: I’m an advisor at Gluon.
• Rob Terp did essentially exactly the same thing as the IntelliJ live templates for NetBeans – it can now autogenerate methods for JavaFX properties. Very nice!
• Aron Sreder has blogged about how to easily implement a JavaFX application preloader.
• Kamil Baczkowicz has released mqtt-spy 0.3.0.

Another week, another bunch of JavaFX links. Enjoy 🙂

• Tom Schindl has two posts this week. Firstly, an interesting read on JavaFX Code editors (specifically about scanner rules required to support eg Asciidoc), and secondly on major improvements to @Preference in e(fx)clipse 2.2.0, which looks very nice.
• I noticed two JEPs go past my twitter stream this week. Firstly, JEP 272 is titled ‘Platform-Specific Desktop Features‘. Secondly, JEP 275 is titled ‘Modular Java Application Packaging‘.
• Jens Deters has announced that MQTT.fx 0.0.17 has been released, with a few nice new features included.
• Dirk Lemmermann has published another of his interviews with companies building real-world JavaFX apps. This week he chats to the people building AISO HRC-Matic.
• Another post from Dirk Lemmermann announces that CalendarFX 1.0 has been released. This is a very nice, highly-polished (and commercial) library for JavaFX. If you need something like this in JavaFX – this is the best option available.
• Rob Terp has posted about binding a List of Strings to a JavaFX ListView.
• Jan Köhnlein has posted about diagram repair in FXDiagram.
• Gluon announced the release of Gluon Charm developer preview 4. This release adds a number of new features – very nice!
