Richard Bair kicked off a fx-games project over on bitbucket for the OpenJFX community to work together on a game to test out the graphical power of JavaFX. The first game being worked on is a JavaFX version of the classic tower defense. Join in on the discussions and offer to start coding or providing graphics resources!
Florian Brunner has stepped into the JavaFX rich client platform arena with his own submission called Drombler FX, which at first glance looks like it strikes a really nice balance (and does some things the way I would do them if I could, e.g. annotations for actions) 🙂
Gerrit Grunwald updated his post from last week to mention he has updated his library to support converting text into SVG paths.
Daniel Zwolenski has a post titled ‘JavaFX with a SpringMVC REST server in 5 minutes‘, which talks about his new Maven archetype for quickly creating REST+JavaFX projects.
jaxenter did a nice post on the recently released DataFX 1.0.
Arnaud Nouard did a teaser post about his work on a SwingNode API to allow for integrating Swing inside JavaFX.
Thierry Wasyl has two posts this week. Firstly he has a post about building JavaFX runnable JAR with IntelliJ IDEA (and Ant). Secondly he has a post about the JavaFX TableView control, in particular allowing to size the column width using percentages (there is actually a Jira issue (RT-17180) for this feature request, so it would be ideal to see this contributed back to OpenJFX).
Speaking of TableView, Amrullah has posted a blog post about their work on the JavaFX TableView control to add in a bunch of new functionality. Again, there may be stuff in here that could be contributed back to OpenJFX.
Leon Atherton has blogged about handling threads and concurrency in JavaFX applications.
Sri kalyan has blogged about some JavaFX event handling tips.
Laurent Nicolas has updated his radial menu control to support submenus and other features.
Randahl Fink Isaksen has posted his thoughts on designing for multiple screen resolutions in JavaFX.

December already?! I know I say it a lot, but time flies! Let’s get on with the links…

Marco Jakob has posted all five parts of his JavaFX 2 tutorials online. You can find all five parts at these links: part 1 (Scene Builder), part 2 (model and TableView), part 3 (interacting with the user), part 4 (CSS styling – making use of JMetro) and part 5 (storing data as XML).
Johan Vos has announced the release of DataFX 1.0. DataFX is a library for retrieving data from remote data sources and easily populating (and rendering) JavaFX UI controls.
Sébastien Bordes has announced the release of JRebirth 0.7.1. JRebirth is a JavaFX 2 Application Framework.
Eric Bruno has published part two of his ‘JavaFX file editor’article. In this entry, he talks about the JavaFX WebView component, the simple file editor itself, and keyboard processing.
Danno Ferrin has two posts this week. Firstly he has posted about his new Gradle JavaFX plugin, and secondly he has a post about using Scenic View in the Gradle JavaFX plugin.
Randahl Fink Isaksen has blogged about JavaFX performance tips to leverage multi-core CPUs.
Hendrik Ebbers continues his JavaFX-related posts this week, including part two of his series of posts on custom UI controls in JavaFX. He also has announced that GridFX is now part of JFXtras (which is great news), and that GridFX is now styleable via CSS with custom CSS properties.
Thierry Wasyl has blogged about how to use the JavaFX TableView control.
Jim Laskey has demonstrated how Nashorn (the Javascript-on-the-JVM project) can use JavaFX.
A new (and open source) library was announced this week for JavaFX data services called Granite Data Services. Check out their blog for a very comprehensive blog post on the functionality offered by this library, as well as their thoughts on input validation in JavaFX (I should note that this is on our radar but not something we’ve started to work on yet) and real-time messaging with JavaFX 2.
René Jahn continues to explore embedded JavaFX. This week he has posts on NFC/RFID for Beagleboard xm with Java, and JavaFX TimeTracking with Beagleboard-xm.
Leon Atherton has a post titled “Reflecting on Reflections: The JavaFX Reflection Effect“.
José Pereda has posted part one of his series of posts on NXTLegoFX, a JavaFX-based application to play with a Lego Mindstorms NXT.
Gerrit Grunwald has posted a useful utility class to convert JavaFX shapes into SVG paths.
Geertjan Wielenga has linked to a YouTube video by Paul and Gail Anderson presenting their JavaFX / Swing / NetBeans sample application.
Carl Dea has had an article about the JavaFX Canvas API published in the November issue of JAX Magazine.
JFrog Artifactory now supports deploying JavaFX applications.
Andres Almiray has one post of note this week where he is generating i18n FXML content on the fly.

Daniel Zwolenski has been working hard on improved Maven tooling for JavaFX. You can check out his JavaFX Maven plugin source code over at Github, and he has also blogged about how to use it on his website.
Speaking of Maven, thanks to a huge amount of help from Hendrik Ebbers we now have released DataFX 1.0 on Maven! If you’re interested, check out the Maven instructions over at the DataFX website. The DataFX 1.0 release is the first release where a lot of the cell factories have been removed (due to being duplicated in JavaFX 2.2), but to make up for that Johan Vos has done a huge amount of work on the data sources. If you don’t use Maven you can also download DataFX 1.0 from the DataFX website.
Speaking of Hendrik, he has continued to develop his excellent GridView JavaFX control. This week he has added in support for pagination using the Pagination control that shipped in JavaFX 2.2.
Tom Schindl has a code snippet to animate the slices of the JavaFX pie chart.
Gerrit Grunwald continues his exploration of the embedded features of Java and JavaFX. He has put up a very detailed blog post about his current research using a Raspberry Pi and a BeagleBoard, and a video showing his home setup.
Jerome Cambon has blogged about the new CSS analyser built into the Scene Builder 1.1 release (which is currently in developer preview).
Speaking of Scene Builder, Mark Heckler has contributed an article to OTN on “How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder“.
Over at Dr Dobbs, Eric Bruno has posted part one of his JavaFX text editor project.
Leon Atherton has a post detailing how to listen to window resize events in JavaFX.

JavaFX links of the week, November 19

Welcome to yet another weeks worth of JavaFX links. Thanks to Neil for his guest editing of last weeks post – I know it isn’t overly fun writing these posts, so I really appreciate his time and contribution. Now, on with the news.

Tom Eugelink blogged about his work on creating an alternative API for JavaFX layouts. So far he has developed a proof of concept for HBox and VBox.
The Jetbrains folks have updated their bug tracker to show that release 12.1 of IntelliJ IDEA will support JavaFX.
Last week at Devoxx I met with Hendrik Ebbers and got a demo of his GridView component (which is very nicely made – and open source). Since Devoxx he has written a number of blog posts about his work, including another demo showing integration with iTunes, a detailed post on writing custom controls, and a post that he believes Swing is dead. The next steps for GridFX (in my humble opinion) are to add virtualisation support (Hendrik and I discussed this at Devoxx), and then consider moving to JFXtras 🙂
The vmFX and eFX projects are now open source. For those not familiar with the projects, eFX is a JavaFX Application Framework based on the NetBeans Platform, and vmFX is a JavaFX-based VM Monitoring tool based on eFX.
Pedro Duque Vieira continues on with his Metro styling for JavaFX. This time around it is the radio button that has gotten the Metro treatment. I have to say it is looking very nice! 🙂
The open-dolphin.org website has been updated with new documentation and updated downloads.
The folks over at IDR Solutions have made available (for free) an online PDF to JavaFX converter.
Mark Heckler has polished the MonologFX API based on JFXtras community feedback.
René Jahn has two posts up this week. Firstly, we has a post about ‘JavaFX + ScenicView + Javeleon = LiveFX‘, and secondly he has a post about JavaFX development on the Beagleboard xm.

Announcing Scenic View 1.3.0

After a little over a month since the release of Scenic View 1.2.0, Ander Ruiz and I are back with the news that Scenic View 1.3.0 is available for immediate download! This release brings with it a number of bug fixes, major performance improvements, much improved CSS support, Mac OS X native menubar integration, an update checker, and an early preview of the animation tracer feature. I highly recommend that all users of Scenic View download this latest version and take it for a spin – hopefully you’ll like what you see. As always the help page has been updated to include the details of the new release Enjoy 🙂
