Firstly, a thank you to everyone who pinged me after my announcement that I was leaving Oracle – I received a huge number of emails of appreciation. My ego is now sufficiently inflated – thanks everyone 🙂 Anyway – it’s the start of another week, so here is another batch of links for you to enjoy! 🙂

• David Gilbert has released a new project called JFreeChart-FX that contains the JavaFX extensions for JFreeChart, and alongside this a new version of JFreeChart (v1.5.0) that aligns with this new project as a dependency. This improves the JavaFX support in JFreeChart. Simultaneously, David has made a new release of FXGraphics2D (a small API that allows Java2D code to be reused with the JavaFX Canvas) that removes some private API calls so that it can be used with JDK9.
• Gerrit Grunwald has posted about smoothed charts in JavaFX. Very nice.
• Renato Athaydes has updated LogFX, a simple Log reader supporting color highlighting and able to handle giant files.
• yWorks has a new release of yFiles for JavaFX. This is a commercial diagramming framework.

A little bit of an interesting week this week!

• I announced that I was leaving Oracle. As I mentioned in that announcement, for now I plan to keep things going as always – weekly links, open source projects for JavaFX, etc.
• Edvin Syse is interviewed about TornadoFX, a Kotlin library for JavaFX, of which there was a new release just recently.
• Gerrit Grunwald has put out another of his Friday Fun components – this time a ‘sun burst’ control.
• Speaking of Gerrit, he has also put on github a ‘smoothcharts‘ library that makes the JavaFX chart lines be smoothed lines.
• Amos Chepchieng has written about making a borderless JavaFX window movable.

Due to excessive levels of travel in the past week, I was unable to pull together the links for last week. I have tried to keep track of the links as best as I could, but I apologise if I miss any today. Please, let me know and I’ll be sure to post them next week.

• Gerrit Grunwald remains as productive as ever: he released an updated TilesFX, he blogged about creating a simple countdown timer, he created a library containing JavaFX-like properties without the bindings / dependencies on JavaFX (useful for example if you want to build Android apps but love the JavaFX API), and he recreated the GitHub commit ‘heatmap’ control in JavaFX.
• Dirk Lemmermann open sourced CalendarFX, his Java framework for creating sophisticated calendar views based on JavaFX.
• Markus Falkhausen has updated his class diagrams for JavaFX to include JavaFX 9.
• William Antônio Siqueira has blogged about JavaFX with Bean Validation and CDI 2.0.
• CheerpJ beta 2 was released this week. CheerpJ is a (commercial) compiler that converts Java applications to browser-based web applications.

Sorry about the lack of links last week. With everyone returning from JavaOne there wasn’t a great deal of news, so I decided to carry it over a week. But, here we go – enjoy 🙂

• I was very pleased to share the news that ControlsFX won a Dukes Choice award at JavaOne.
• Gerrit Grunwald has returned to the land of UIs 🙂 and has a blog post about another of his ‘Friday Fun’ components. Gerrit has also updated his TilesFX dashboard project, and posted a video of the current offering – it’s very nice.
• Mario Ivankovits has posted a build of Java 9 with JavaFX for Raspberry Pi.
• Renato Athaydes has two things this week: firstly, a post on ‘Say no to Electron! Using JavaFX to write a fast, responsive desktop application.’ He also has updated LogFX, a “simple log reader supporting color highlighting and able to handle giant files”.
• I came across AgroSense this past week – an “open source farm managament and precision agriculture solution” written with JavaFX.

• The big news in the last week is the release of Java 9, and with it updates to JavaFX. This is, of course, a major release which brings with it a lot of changes, mostly around modularity, but there is a huge amount of engineering effort in many less visible areas. I recommend all developers start exploring Java 9 as time permits.
• With Java 9 out, the libraries we use all need to make the necessary changes to work under the Java 9. This week there have been a huge number of tweets and release announcements of updated versions of various libraries to support Java 9. Libraries in the Java desktop area that have announced Java 9 support include ControlsFX and FontAwesomeFX.
• As well as libraries, Gluon has released an updated Scene Builder, for both Java 8 and Java 9.
• Jens Deters has released a fix for MQTT.fx for a bug only present for users of MacOS High Sierra.
• Thomas Nield has updated RxJavaFX with a minor release to tweak an API.
• Gerrit Grunwald has returned to his tilesfx dashboard library, fixing some issues.
• Andres Almiray has posted about defining custom behaviour in FXML with FXMLLoader.

It’s the week before JavaOne, and it will be a very interesting week for attendees and those playing at home. Here’s the links from the past week (or two) related to Java client, enjoy 🙂

• I just released ControlsFX 8.40.14 and 9.0.0. This brings bug fixes, translation improvements, and of course Java 9 support.
• José Pereda has released fxyz3d 0.2.0.
• Dirk Lemmermann has released a new form generation project called FormsFX (not to be mistaken with FXForm!). There is also a slide deck you can peruse.
• Wim Deblauwe has blogged about using Spring Boot with JavaFX.
• Justin Biard has blogged about updating Knockout.js view models in JavaFX WebViews from Nashorn.
• Jyloo Software has announced that SyntheticaFX for Java 9 has been released. They have also updated Synthetica / SyntheticaAddons to version 3 to take into account Java 9 modules, as well as bring in a bunch of new features.
• The Zapsi blog has a lot of interesting posts on various projects, many of which make use of JavaFX.
